REFERENDUM PROPOSED
INVERCARGILL CONTROVERSY (By Telegraph.—Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Friday A decision to take a referendum on the question of the establishment of hotels in the suburbs of Invercargill was made at a special meeting of the City Council this afternoon. The referendum will be taken on May 27, the date of the civic elections. The council reached its decision after hearing a deputation from a committee set up at a meeting on Tuesday to prepare a case against hotels in the suburbs. The deputation offered to meet the cost of taking a referendum if the council granted its request. The town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman, said that a referendum would have no legal effect. It could simply be used as evidence in the Supreme Court.
