JAPANESE CONVOY ATTACKED SYDNEY. Jan. 18. A 1000-ton cargo ship was hit twice amidships and destroyed when night air patrols attacked a south-bound convoy in the Kavieng area, says General MacArthur’s communique. Air patrols at Said6r intercepted an enemy attack formation, shooting down 17 fighters and a divebdmbef, with two more fighters probably shot down. Only minor loss was suffered by the Allied force. 30 enemy fighters attempted to intercept an attack on enemy-held villages from Cape Gourdon to Suramarang. Three were shot down, two probably destroyed and others damaged, for the loss of one plane. BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS Heavy rain last night slowed up the greens when play was continued in the sectional divisions of the rinks in the New Zealand bowling championships at Dunedin today. There was brilliant sunshine for the third set of games but bowlers had to contend with a tricky north-westerly wind. A Press Association message from Dunedin contains a list of teams with three wins and another list of teams with three losses, neither list including any of the four teams from Hamilton participating.
