MUCH-DECORATED AIRMAN (Sporlal Corrt*=T»on(7Pfit> (Received Nov. 23, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 22 Wing-Commander Russell Mackenzie, D.F.C., A.F.C., of Christchurch, who was recently awarded the D. 5.0., is regarded as one of the outstanding New Zealanders in the Middle East. He arrived in England before the war and took a short service commission. Then after a period of instructing he was with Beaufighter night fighters before going to Egypt. He shot down two German planes over Alexandria at night and another when at Malta, from where he carried out nightstrafing of enemy aerodromes. With his observer, Flying-Officer A. Craig, of Wellington, he later operated from Benghazi, then from Misurata. He is now in Cyprus, and is operating over Kos and Leros.
