SAMOS SURRENDERS
BRITISH GARRISON CAPTURED (Received Nov. 23, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Nov. 22 The Berlin radio announced thal. the garrison of Samos Island surrendered this morning. The radio’s military commentator stated that the capitulation occurred on the initiative of about 3500 British soldiers, who in view of the lack of air protection refused to face bombardment from Stukas without any chance oi success. With the fall of Samos the entire Aegean system of bases of the British and Italian troops is in German hands. Reuter’s military correspondent says that although tne German claim is not confirmed in London there is no disposition to regard it as unfounded. It is considered unlikely that as many British soldiers are involved as the Germans state. The reasons which prompted the British authorities to run the risk of establishing the exposed garrisons of Kos, Leros and Samos have not yet been explained.
