LOCAL, AND GENERAL

Gift From New Zealand The New Zealand Government has offered to panel and furnish a room in the reconstructed City of London Guildhall. Today’s meeting of the Council decided warmly to thank the Dominion for its generous gift, says a message from London. Elector 94 Years Old One of the oldest voters in Hamilton today was Mrs Martha Jamieson, of Naylor Street. Hamilton East, who is 94 years of age. Today she was taken to a polling booth by car. She has many electors among her descendants, for she has 69 greatgrandchildren, 46 grandchildren and nine children living. Mrs Jamieson has spent 30 years in Hamilton. Prisoners’ Mail The Postmaster-General, the Hon. P. C. Webb, announced that in view of the existing situation in Italy, the recent postings of parcels and letters for New Zealand prisoners in that country have been forwarded to London so that the correspondence could, if necessary, be redirected and sent on from there. This course would be continued until the position was clarified.

Hot Water for Schools Support for the provision of a hot water supply for schools, such as is installed in other Government buildings, was sought in a letter from the Otago High Schools’ Board received at the monthly meeting of the Hamilton High Board of Governors yesterday. It was pointed out that hot

showers were essential for pupils playing winter games. The board decided to lend support to the request. Dominion Day Observance Dominion Day, which falls on Monday, will be observed by some professions but is not a holiday for the general public. The banks, which formerly closed on Dominion Day, will remain open. The day commemorates the advancement of New Zealand from the status of a selfgoverning colony to that of a Dominion. The proclamation was made on September 26, 1907, but in recent years the anniversary has been observed on the nearest Monday. Hamilton People’s Theatre The Hamilton People’s Theatre recently presented two one-act play readings. The first play “According to Plan,” dealing with the Nazi armies in Russia, was produced by M; Alan Taylor, and the second, “The Willing Horse,” by the New Zealand playwright, Isobel Andrev/s, was produced by Mrs Doris Smart. A strong caste interpreted each play faithfully, and the contrast between the two plays was particularly effective. The People’s Theatre’s programme of activities includes readings of Oscar Wilde’s play “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar” and Sean O’Casey’s new play, “Red Roses for Me.” Women Electors Thank Candidate An unsual compliment was accorded a political candidate last night, when Mr F. Findlay, the National candidate for the Hamilton seat, addressed 400 to 500 electors in the Theatre Royal. The proposer and seconder of the vote of thanks were Mrs H. C. Ross and Mrs Waite, respectively. Mrs Ross added to her motion of thanks congratulations on the very fair way in which Mr Findlay had conducted his campaign, and said she hoped that in twelve months’ time, when M.P. for Hamilton, he would still be the same genuine and sincere man he was today, and not swollen-headed as so many members of Parliament were at present. The sentiments expressed were warmly applauded. Marines’ Film of New Zealand

A film which will present New Zealand to the people of the United States as America’s fighting men see the country is now being made in the Dominion by the cinematographic unit of the United States Marine Corps in the south Pacific. The script for the film, which is to be 4000 feet long, has been prepared by two Marine Corps officers, Captain Milton Sperling, formerly an asassistant producer for 20th CenturyFox films, and the well-known Hollywood actor, Captain Louis Hayward. The film is being produced essentially for United States consumption, ard is intended to show what sort of people the New Zealanders are, what they eat, what they wear, how they talk, and how they work and play. The producers hope that it will introduce New Zealand and the United States to each other in the proper way. Sir George Grey

Sunday. September 26, marks the 82nd anniversary of the arrival in Auckland of Sir George Grey to take up his second term of office as Governor of New Zealand. In 1861 there was considerable trouble in the young colony following the Taranaki War, and the need was felt for a Governor with an understanding of the Maori situation. Sir George Grey was then Governor of Cape Colony, where he was doing excellent work, and he was again appointed to New Zealand. However, the Waikato tribes had become disaffected, and with those of the King Country and Bay of Plenty, with accretions from the Urewera, they defied the Government, and the Waikato War of 186364 began. Sir George Grey’s influence with the Maoris helped materially in causing the Maoris to abandon further armed opposition after the epic defence of Orakau. He held office until 1868, when he was peremptorily withdrawn by the Colonial Office.
