NOVEL METHOD
ELECTION PROPAGANDA SHOWERED FROM THE AIR AUCKLAND, Thursday On Germany, on Italy, on enemy occupied countries, Allied planes have showered leaflets as the only means of passing information on to enslaved peoples. Except for patriotic purposes such a means of publicity has never been used in New Zealand, but electioneering history was made in Auckland yesterday when parts of the city were showered with election propaganda leaflets from the air. The leaflets carried the Democratic Labour Party’s manifesto or solicited support for the party’s candidates for Auckland East and Auckland Central, Flying-Officer L. S. Dromgoole and Mr L. A. Wheatley. The party apparently intended to make more use of the air than merely for broadcasting. It will remain one of the minor mysteries of the election how an aircraft, a large, modern American one, was made available for the purpose. Nobody at all had anything to do with the introduction of this novel meViod of introducing electioneering propaganda to the public if official denials of the party officers are to be taken at their face value. There was no one who would accept official responsibility for the display.
