MR FINDLAY’S CAMPAIGN
PUBLIC SERVANTS ADDRESSED If the National Party took office a» the result of the general election, salaries and wages of employees of the Railways Department would be reviewed, said Mr Frank Findlay, National candidate for Hamilton, in an address to railwaymen at Frankton. Relief for the family man would be provided by Increasing the income tax exemptions for wife and children, and by the introduction of a graduated scale of wage tax adjusted according to the size of the family. Assertions by Ministers of the Labour Government that the cost of living had increased only 14 per cent above pre-war prices were incorrect, Mr Findlay said. He produced for the inspection of the audience a list of checked grocer’s prices, covering 100 articles, which showed that the Tribunal prices of 1943 represented an average increase of 66 per cent as compared with 1938. The meeting was attended by about 70 railwaymen, and interjections and questions were frequent However, the discussion was conducted in a friendly way and the candidate was given an excellent hearing. A vote of thanks to Mr Findlay was carried by acclamation. Later, Mr Findlay addressed a representative gathering of civil servants at the National Club. The leader of the National Party, Mr S. G. Holland, was present at the opening of the meeting and replied to many of the questions asked. Mr Findlay then outlined the policy of the National Party and briefly reviewed the record of the present Government during eight years in office.
