BUTCHERS CONCERNED
BEEF IN SHORT SUPPLY (By Telegraph—Pros< Association) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The public’s lack of response to the butchers’ appeal to eat less beef and more mutton is causing serious concern to Auckland butchers, who expected an immediate response as the shortage of beef is expected to be only temporary. Auckland butchers, at a meeting last night, unanimously condemned the rigidity of the price order, which fixes the maximum prices of joints and cuts. They declare the big demand for beef could have been checked long ago by charging higher prices, and they demand that provision be made not only to meet normal winter shortages in the future but to cope with abnormal conditions when they occur. It was resolved that all butchers draw portion of their supplies of beef from the quantity made available now by the Government, and also request the Government to control the wholesale prices of all meat to make them parallel with the retail price order.
