CELEBRATION IN SUVA

UNITED NATIONS DAY (Received June 15, 11 a.m.) SUVA, June 14 Fiji’s position on the 180th meridian gave the colony the honour of being the first to celebrate United Nations Day. From a stand in the centre of the town the Governor and the United States Commanding General took the salute. Troops bearing the flags of the United Nations headed the march, then came representatives of all the services, the emergency reserve corps (civil defence), patriotic organisations and representatives of the armed forces of the United States, New Zealand and Fiji. A United States officer led the parade, which was one of the largest and most impressive held in Suva for many years.
