JAPANESE SUFFER HEAVILY (omclti Wlreleu) _j , (Received June 14, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, June 13 [ Twenty-five of a formation of 40 • to 50 Japanese Zero fighter* were 1 shot down by United States Navy 1 and Army Marine pilots in a furious dogfight near Russell Islands. A communique states that during ' the night of June 10 Flying Fortresses and Avengers bombed and j started fires among Japanese positions in the Buin area. On the morning of June 12 American fighters in--1 tercepted 40 to 50 Zeros and shot down 25. Eight more were probably brought down. The American losses weff six planes, but four of the pilots are safe. On the sapae morning Liberators enoounterecPvwo Mitsubishi bomb- : ers 20 miles west of Buka Islands and destroyed one. During the morning of June 11 Liberators, Mitchells, Lightnings and Warhawks carried out five attacks against Japanese installations on Kiska Island. Hits were scored in the main camp area and on the runway. Barges in the harbour were bombed ani strafed.
