Mrs J. R. Fitz Gerald, Hamilton, is visiting Te Aroha. Mrs D’Arcy Brunton, Hamilton, has left to take up residence in Te Awamutu for the duration.
Miss Joan Cornthwaite, W.A.A.F. is in Hamilton on a week’s furlough. Miss E. McKenzie, Wellington, has been visiting Hamilton.
Miss Maureen Harder, W.A.A.F., has been in Hamilton on leave. When the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall visited the Army clothing repair depot in Wellington their Excellencies were struck by the stupendous nature of the task. They watched garments being repaired by helpers and the special methods used. The reknitting of socks on a knitting machine held their interest for some time. His Excellency took great pleasure in knitting the leg of his first sock, and Lady Newall completed the heel, foot, and toe in quick time. This sock is Ito be presented to their Excellencies !as a memento of their visit.
| Miss Winifred Stenhouse, dietitiar jat the Women’s College, Sydney University, has been appointed to an imjportant post in the Commonwealth I Government nutrition campaign. Her ■job will be to assist the Government ! nutrition expert (Dr. Clemens) to l teach Australians to make the best use of available foods, and to use substitutes for others in short supply jor unprocurable. The Commonwealth campaign will also include hints about the cooking and preparation of alternative foods. For instance, when oranges and tomatoes are scarce and potatoes plentiful, it is recommended that to offset the loss of vitamin C, a family of a man, wife and three j children should daily eat 2 lb of .new potatoes—cooked in their jackjets to retain the precious vitamin.
