TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT An outstanding- programme of singing, dancing-, music, mag-ic and humour is to he presented in the Theatre Royal tonight by the Hamilton orphans’ Club and its ; associate members. The club’s orchestra i (the largest in the province), consisting- or! 4 u musicians, will be a feature of the! evening’s entertainment. The proceeds arc to be devoted to the patriotic funds. , CIVIC THEATRE “ To the Shores or Tripoli,” which has been attracting- large audiences, will be screened lor the last time tonigth. In this exciting- film most or the action takes ! place at the San Diego Marine Base, and it is there that John Payne, as a raw recruit, is turned into a first-class lighting man by Sergeant Randolph Scott. Maureen j O’Hara Is seen as a pretty navy nurse. ; STATE THEATRE Two well-contrasted linns, a sparkling comedy and a thrilling drama, provide splendid .entertainment. “ Calling fhilo Vance” Is a murder mystery full of romance and adventure. “ Naughty But Nice,” featuring Ann Sheridan. Dick Powell ; and Gale Page, is a gay comedy. The songs introduced incluue “ Hooray for Spinach,” “ Corn Pickin’,” “In a Moment of Weakness,” “ Pin Happy About the Whole Thing,” and “ I Don’t Believe in Signs.” | ROXY THEATRE Jaik London’s colourful romance, “ Queen or yie Yukon,” has been brought to the, screen very successfully. Charles Bickford and Irene Rich give outstanding performaiu / . - Phantom Submarine” is another thrji.ing drama, with a touch of mystery. “ Life Begins for Andy Hardy,” featuring Mickey Rooney, and -‘Silver stallion” will be screened tomorrow. REGENT THEATRE “ Woman of the Year” shows In entertaining fashion what happens when a notable woman marries a man of the people. Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and Fay Bainter head the cast. “ Rio Rita,” combining tuneful music and merry comedy, will head the new programme tomorrow. Abbott and Costello, the popular comedians, are the principal runmukers. THEATRE ROYAL Owing to the theatre being otherwise engaged turns will not be screened tonight. Tomorrow -• What's Cookin’? ” and “ Cadets on Parade” will be screened. “ What’s Cookin’ ? ” is a gay musical comedy, introducing such melodious numbers as ‘ Liebesuaum,” “ If,” “ Blue Flame,” -‘ Lo, Here the Gentle Lark,” " 11 Bacio,” etc. *“ Cadets on Parade” combines thrills with romance.
