“MOTHER OF THE FORCES” SEVEN NOMINATIONS LODGED Seven Hamilton women were nom- > inated at a well-attended meeting . last night as candidates for the t “Mother of the Forces” campaign . that is being instituted to raise the balance of the quota for Hamilton in » the Auckland Provincial Patriotic ? Fund Campaign to raise £500,000. The l meeting was convened by the Hamilton Commercial Travellers and Busij nessmen’s Club, and Mr K. McLeod . presided. ? The Mayor of Hamilton, Mr H. D. s Caro, who is chairman of the Waikato zone of the Provincial Patriotic f Council, attended by invitation, and ’ explained the reasons for launching . the campaign. He said Hamilton’s » quota was £36,000, of which about j £20.000 had been raised, most of it in the recent “Popular Girl” contest. The provincial campaign was to end j on December 31, and Waikato was ; called on to raise £106,000. Of the! £500.000 quota for Auckland province £250,000 would be set aside for re- j ; habilitation of soldiers, sailors and : '• airmen on their return, and it would be used to maintain the men until the | . Government’s major scheme of re- , . habilitation was operating. Local Rehabilitation Mr Caro mentioned that Hamilton i had a small committee—Mr J. R. Fow, three members of the R.S.A., ! '• and himself—acting as a Rehabilita- ! ’ tion Committee, and it had already ! " dealt with a number of cases, grant- | - ing about £6OO. Not one appeal with j ; any merit had been rejected. He j . added that the Patriotic Funds Board •'was providing money to equip and ; i maintain establishments in nearly i 100 camps in the Dominion; and also • providing amenities for naval men ' and merchant sailors on the seas. The chairman briefly explained the plan of campaign locally, the competition to end on October 31, with " the fortnight following occupied with . a contest between the winners of the • respective groups, Army, Navy and J Air Force. It was hoped to have . competition among several candidates • representing each of the forces, the ' ultimate winner to be the “Mother ; of the Forces.” ? Mason and C. L. - Wilson agreed to act as honorary • organisers, and to advise the respective committees, while the Commer- ": cial Travellers and Businessmen’s Club gave an undertaking to assist • throughout the campaign, with funds '■raised by their own efforts paid into ’| the general fund, and any money raised by the competing committees, • with the help of the club workers, ; would be credited to those com- • mittees.
