Y.M.C.A. RATES

BOROUGH COUNCIL ASSISTANCE The Rating Committee recommended the Hamilton Borough Council last night to make a grant of £35 out of unauthorised expenditure to the Y.M.C.A., subject to arrears of rates being paid within 14 days; and also that a grant of £25 be made each year subsequently for the duration of fhe war. Explaining the recommendation, the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, said the grant was designed to alleviate financial difficulties caused by so many of the young people who had used the Y.M.C.A. and Y.W.C.A. taking up war duties. The rating committee had conferred with a deputation from the board of directors, and it was felt that as rates could not be remitted the best course was to make a grant out of unauthorised expenditure money. Air J. Treloar commended the recommendation and said the proposed grant would be an encouragement to those who had consistently helped the Y.M.C.A. Air C. Lafferty made an appeal for remitting all the rates, saying that the Y.M.C.A. was performing work equally as good as the churches, which had their properties free of rating obligations. To Mr T. G. Reynolds, the Town Clerk said the Y.AI.C.A. rates were about £75 annually. Several councillors took part in a discussion, after which the recommendation was adopted unanimously.
