CONTROL IN UNITED STATES CONSERVATION OF SUPPLIES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tei. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 Mr Jesse Jones, Secretary of Commerce, and Mr Donald W. Nelson, c’i airman of the War Production Board, in a joint statement, warned the people of the United States that the tyres now on their passengei automobiles will be all they will get until the war ends. The statement is beleved to have been issued in order to halt widespread rumours that the Government has large stocks of rubber which it is withholding from manufacturers, but which will be made available for civilian consumption some time in the future. On the contrary, the statement declared, “ unless we restrict all civilian use of rubber to bare essentials we shall not have enough for our military machine for the next two years.” President Roosevelt said that everything that can be done to get vital rubber supplies from Brazil was being done. The minimum obtainable was probably 15,000 tons, and anything above that must come from the jungles. A considerable problem was getting people into the jungles and getting the rubber out, but it was possible to obtain as much as 70,000 tons. The War Production Board has announced that it will purchase all 30,000 automobiles estimated to be in “ car graveyards ” throughout the United States, and then allocate the scrap iron and stee, 1 thus obtained to war producton plants.
