Naval Allowances New regulations have been gazetted governing marriage and dependants’ allowances in the Royal New Zealand Navy, these being amendments of the Naval Defence Act, 1913. Marriage allowances are now paid to ratings at a fiat rate of £1 a week, with the addition of 5s a week for each child, with a maximum of £2 5s a week in all. The new schedule has been made retrospective from June 1, 1939. Raid Precautions Three minutes was the time recently taken by the staff of a New Plymouth bank to pack up all books or documents of importance and lodge them in the strongroom. The occasion was a trial of measures to be taken in the event of an emergency, to protect vital records before the staff left to seek refuge in slit trenches.
