OBITUARY

MAYOR OF MATAMATA MR JOHN BUCHANAN The death occurred on Saturday of the Mayor of Matamata, Mr John Buchanan, aged 60. Born in Auckland, he was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and commenced a legal practice at Thames 28 years ago. Moving to Matamata in 1918, he was elected chairman of the Mata 7 mata Town Board in September, 1926. He vacated office in September, 1932. Because of the failure of Mr W. A. Gordon to contest the mayoralty, Mr Buchanan was elected in May, 1941 against Mr A. E. Wrigley. During Mr Buchanan’s term of office the E.P.S. organisation was brought to a peak of efficiency. In the sporting sphere Mr Buchanan was a keen bowler. He was elected president of the Matamata Bowling Club 21 years ago and had held office on several occasions since. He was the singles champion of the club. A foundation member of the Matamata Swimming Club, founded 12 years ago, Mr Buchanan was president for nearly half that period, and at the time of his death he was patron of the club. During those years ot service he was delegate to the South Auckland Swimming Centre. On Saturday afternoon Mr Buchanan presided at the handing over of the Centennial Baths to the Borough Council. On leaving this function he felt unwell and returned home. He died a few hours later. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
