DERBY TO SYMPHONY HOT FAVOURITE BEATEN SCROUNGER—SONJA HENIE OTAHUHU TO DOUBLE PETER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Saturday There was a large attendance at Alexander Park this arternoon, Tor the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting, which was held in glorious weather. Winner trained by W. Fleming, Onehunga Detections reduced the field by three, and Scrounger pleased his supporters when he was with the leaders throughout, winning in a good finish by hair-a-length. Portadown was also always prominent, but he was ralrly beaten. Sonja Henie, well back in the early stages, took command three furlongs from home and was not afterwards seriously troubled, winning by a length and a-quar-ter from Kewpie’s Crown and Ringstone four lengths away third. The improving Tanworthy, a sister to Tan Jorfn. was responsible for a nice performance when she won easily by a length and a-hair rrom Robie. who came home solidly arter losing a lot of ground at the start.' Great Trust set up a long lead in the first few rurlongs, but broke badly when the pressure was applied. Etta Girl nnished third arter an indifferent display. Symphony was coupled with Suffragette and Right Ring with Our Find. The hot ravourite, Pacing Power, let hi? supporters down when he failed to catch Symphony, who had led throughout. In the , filial stages. The Ally was too solid ror I him. At Christchurch in November Pacing Power won the New Zealand Derby M '< 20, while today's winner had also recorded a tick over that time. It was expected they would nearly equal 3.15 under, the Ideal conditions today. Berry appeared to be driving Pacing Power very confidently in second place over the last few furlongs, but his finishing effort was not an attractive one. When the horses were let go Right Ring and Suffragette broke, and Symphony led rrom Übakim, Joan’s Jewel, Pacing Power and Right Ring. Passing the stands Symphony was going well, clear or Übakim, who broke and was soon pulled up, Pacing Power going Into second place. The leader went on to win very nicely hj a length and a hair, with Right Ring three lengths awav third. Times: 3.24, 3.24 3-5, 326 On returning to the birdcage, Symphony was accorded a rousing reception, onlookers being quick to recognise a sterling performance. Double Peter, who raced ralrly well at Claudelands. was responsible for the best effort of his career when he ran from the seventh position at the hair-mile to take the lead in the straight and maintain his advantage under pressure to score by a length, In god time. Half a mile from home there were several in a bunch, any one or which seemed capable of a win. Blit Double Peter took all the honours. Kete Kura was second, a length away, and then came Klnawley in third place, a head away, Our Peggy fourth, and Munga Tangl and Bronze Queen practically together next.
