NEGLIGENT DRIVING
TAXI-DRIVER IN COURT Two. charges were preferred against Allan Kingston, taxi-driver, Grey Street, Hamilton East, before Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. One charge was that he made a written statement to a police officer knowing it to be contrary to fact, and the other charge alleged negligent driving in Angelsea Street, Hamilton, on December 26, 1941. Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh, prosecuting, said he would offer no evidence concerning the alleged false statement. Sergeant H. F. Coddington said he interviewed Kingston on December 27, 1941, concerning an allegation by him that a heavy lorry had collided with his car. Kingston admitted the statement was incorrect. The actual facts were, according to Kingston, that he had collided with a transformer near the corner of Ward and Angelsea streets, after taking beer offered him by a soldier passenger. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed for negligent driving.
