ACT OF GALLANTRY
PRIVATE SAVES CORPORAL (By Telegraph.—Press Association) TAURANGA, Thursday The General Officer commanding the 2nd N.Z.E.F., Major-General B. C. Freyberg, has directed attention to .an act of gallantry by Private A. I. Price, of Tauranga. Private Price was driving a Bren gun carrier when a petrol tin exploded, setting fire to the carrier and blowing Corporal Cresswell, out of the machine. Corporal Cresswell, who is the son of Mr and Mrs H. B. Cresswell, of Edgecumbe, was pinned under the tracks of the carrier, and Private Price, who had jumped out, returned to his seat in the blazing machine, and endeavoured to start the He was unable to do this, but with great presence of mind and complete disregard of personal danger, engaged reverse gear and backed off, using the self-starter. He then dragged Cbrporal Cresswell free. Private Price suffered burns, but by his gallant conduct undoubtedly saved Corporal Cresswell’s life. The accident occurred on October 4, 1941. Corporal Cresswell has been dangerously ill, but is now well on the road to recovery.
