ASSAULT RENEWED
ALLIED COUNTER=ATTACK SUCCESS AT ONE POINT ENEMY COME IN WAVES (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 12 Japanese pressure on Singapore Island slackened during the night, but was renewed this morning, states the British Broadcasting Corporation’s observer. The enemy’s attacks this morning started with the dive-bombing ancl machine-gunning of the Allied positions. The Japanese are also using light and medium tanks. The position on the island at midnight has been officially described in London. The Allied troops were then east of a line stretching from the naval base in the north to the reservoirs, and thence to the racecourse, five miles north-west of the city, and from there to the coast near Panjang. An Allied counter-attack on the left flank had been successful, but in other parts the defenders had been forced to fall back. According to reports, the Japanese claims to be in Singapore city are grossly exaggerated. Contrasting with the earlier claims from Tokio, a Domei despatch from iSingapore states that the Japanese forces this morning continued their advance on the city in successive waves. The Domei further stated that Japanese planes yesterday bombed 25 warships and merchantmen preparing to leave Singapore with defenders. No official information has been received in London today from Singapore beyond the announcement that the Imperial forces in the western sector have been pushed farther back.
