LIQUOR TO NATIVES
FINE OF £5 IMPOSED | Answering a charge in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today of supplying liquor to female natives at Frankton Junction on January 13, Trevor Hedges, hospital porter, Frankton Junction (Mr W. J. King), pleaded guilty. I Senior-Sergeant A. G. McHugh, I prosecuting, said defendant invited ! three young native women to go for a drive with him. He procured nine bottles of beer at Whatawhata, and drove back to the Hamilton Lake ■ grounds, where most of the liquor j was consumed. When questioned by | the police Hedges admitted the facts, j and explained that he did not know it was an offence. j Remarking that legislation had ■ been especially enacted to prevent supply of liquor to female natives, Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., imposed a fine of £5.
