THIS WEEK’S MARKETS

FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EGGS STILL IN GOOD SUPPLY A fairly plentiful supply of local fruits is reported on the markets today, with prices fair and ranging according to quality. Peaches are bringing from 7s to 9s, nectarines from 7s to 10s, and plums 5s to 10s a case. There is a large number of tomatoes on hand and prices show a rising tendency. The season for Otago apri-( cots is in full swing and they are realising from 10s to 15s a case. Ripe bananas are in fair quantity, while the new season's apples are coming forward and there is a fairly good demand for Gravensteins. Prices are high for the time of year. This also applies to pears, which are being sold at £1 a case. There is a good supply of beans and cabbages, wheih are very cheap. Prices for peas are fairly high, but potatoes, which are now more plentiful, are considerably lower, bringing from 8s to 9s a sugar bag. Good quality onions are realising from 5s to 6s a sugar bag, and most root vegetables, including beetroot and parsnips, are fairly cheap. Hen eggs are in fairy short supply and the demand for them is brisk. Heavy grade eggs arc selling at 2s standard at 2s 41d, and medium at 2s lid a dozen. Duck eggs arc not in such demand and are selling at 2s Old a dozen. There is still a sufficient supply of eggs in Hamilton, but it is expected that rationing will eventually come.
