BUSY BEES’ BRANCH

LADY GALWAY GUILD In presenting the first annual report of the “ Busy Bees ” branch of the Lady Galway Guild at a display of work held in the Nixon Street hall on Wednesday, Mrs McKenzie, the president, gave the total number of articles made by an average of 12 members as 1087, 640 of these being | for hospital and 447 for the homeless - of Britain. She expressed the thanks ! of the branch for the donations of money, clothing and other saleable articles to help its activities. Mrs H. C. Ross, on behalf -of the Lady Galway Guild, spoke of the outstanding excellence of the work of this branch, which was one of the best in the district. “ The Lady Galway Guild,” said Mrs Ross, “ is, perhaps, the most successful and necessary war work undertaken by the women of New Zealand in their endeavour to help their kinsmen in England, and the example of the “ Busy Bees ” in their industry and sacrifice of time and personal interests, is one to be emulated by all. Mr T. Parker, who with Mrs Parker, has packed over 110 shipping tons of clothing in the last 12 months, com- i plimented the branch on the standard : of its contributions. Following a presentation to Mrs i McKenzie by Mrs V. Carley from the j members in appreciation of her un- j tiring services of the branch, Mrs 1 Ross declared the display open, and j the large attendance had an oppor- j tunity of viewing the collection of | clothing, much of which was ingenu- i ously contrived, and which included j articles made by the Maori children ; at the Waiohau Native School, j Whakatane. Brisk business was done at the ! well-laden stalls, and a delicious j afternoon tea, provided by the mem- I bers, was served, the remainder be- S ing sent to the soldiers in hospital. | The winners of the various competi- : tions were Mrs Cunningham, Mrs Carley, Mrs Marten and Miss Gardner.
