(By Telegraph.—Prpss Association)

WELLINGTON, Friday Following a request for its ap-j proval of loans of £9OOO for the j erection of a tank to hold an emerg- ' ency water supply of half a million j gallons, and £2500 for additional i emergency accommodation, at the! Lower Hutt Hospital, the Makara i County Council discussed the ques- j tion of responsibility for disabled I soldiers.

Members maintained that it should be wholly the ‘duty of the State, and a motion carried included: “That the council support the Wellington City Council in its attitude that the Government should accept responsibility for soldiers’ hospitals.” The Fly—a Prolific Breeder

Two flies are capable of producing, in one year, as many as 335,293,200.000,000 flies, said Mr A. E. S. Hanan at the last meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, urging the council to take precautionary meas- j ures against the spreading of disease ! by flies. A fly’s egg, he said, was the i size of a pin’s head. In 10 days this j egg became an adult, which in seven : days began laying eggs at the rate j of one hundred every 10 days. Mr | Hanan said flies were capable of 1 spreading 30 well-known diseases and one fly would carry on its body no fewer than 5,000,000 germs—: enough to infect a whole household. The public accepted the common fly, he said, without realising its harmful potentialities.
