GERM ISOLATED

TREATMENT OF INFLUENZA ; United Press Assn. Elec. Tel. Copyright) CAPETOWN, Sept. 21 Dr. E. H. Cluver, director of the South African Institute for Medical Research, announced that the institute had succeeded in isolating the influenza germ. The research was undertaken at the request of the Defence Department, with a view to the possibility of a repetition of the world scourge of 1918. Dr. Cluver admitted that many claims in the past were unjustified but said: “We are absolutely certain that we have isolated the right germ. We hope that a vaccine that we shall soon prepare will be successful.” Dr. Eustace Henry Cluver has been honorary Professor of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand since 1938.
