THEFT BY SOLDIER
OVER- STAYED HIS LEAVE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Wednesday An Australian, Ray Ashworth, aged 43,. appeared in battledress in the New Plymouth Police Court today and admitted theft. Because the military authorities wanted him for over-staying his leave, Ashworth was detained by a constable at Rahotu on Tuesday, and was subsequently arrested by the Army and lodged in the New Plymouth lock-up. Being under suspicion, he was questioned about the theft of five blankets, and eventually admitted the offence. Justices of the peace today ordered him to come up for sentence within six months if called upon. A military escort will take Ashworth back to Wellington tomorrow. The escort corporal, when questioned by the Bench, said Ashworth enlisted on April 9, 1941, and was on duty with Guards Vital Points at Wellington.
