INCOME RETURNS
TWO OFFENDERS FINED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Friday Two prosecutions brought in the Police Court by the Commissioner of Taxes resulted in fines totalling £225 being imposed by Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. Victoria Effie Warbrick, nurse, who until recently conducted a large maternity hospital, was fined £SO on each of three charges of wilfully furnishing false returns of income for the years ended March 31, 1938-39-40. The prosecution said the offences were deliberate and serious, the discrepancies between the amounts declared and the actual earnings being £950, £992 and £9lB. An eldprly Assyrian clothing manufacturer, Joseph Waken, was fined £25 on each of three charges of negligently making false returns. On his behalf counsel said Waken could not read or write and had made genuine mistakes. Three alternative charges against Waken of wilfully making false returns were withdrawn.
