WORLD CRISIS
ADVICE TO AMERICANS MAKE CHOICE NOW BIG DEFENCE OUTLAY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlg-ht) WASHINGTON, July 29 Addressing the national convention of holders of the Legion of Honour, the Secretary of the Navy. Colonel Knox, challenged the American public to make its decision now on the course of the world crisis. “Today the American people must be brave, or there is not going to be any American people,” declared Colonel Knox. “If the time comes when Americans are not willing to fight to preserve -the freedoms we have inherited, those freedoms will be destroyed and taken from us by a stronger breed of men.” Colonel Knox denounced as cowardice the creed of those who would disband the half-trained army and professed to see no danger in the world crisis. Senator Alben W. Barkley, the Democratic leader in the Senate, announced that the measure providing for the extension of army service would be discussed in the Senate next week. The Senate Military Committee reported that whereas the determination by Congress to declare a state of national emergency would require considerable debate, and in the meantime measures were necessary to prevent the disintegration of the army and provide for its proper maintenance, certain restrictions appropriate in normal times must be removed. A two billion-dollar defence appropriation bill has been passed by the House of Representatives and will go to the Senate. Criticism of Minister In a debate in the Senate, Senator Wheeler, the isolationist leader, accused the Secretary for War, Mr H. L. Stimson, of acting with cold 2nd calculated cunning to create the impression that the anti-war postcards sent out by Senator Wheeler had been circulated in army camps. He said the Administration’s condemnation of his (Senator Wheeler’s) action was part of a programme to teiirify the American people into submitting to participation in the foreign war. Not one voice was raised in defence of Mr Stimson as senator after senator joined in the debate to defend Senator Wheeler’s patriotism and integrity. Even Senator Alben W. Barkley, the Democratic leader, praised Senator Wheeler as one of the ablest and most courageous members of the Senate. CLASH AT STEEL WORKS SOLDIERS ATTACK PICKETS (Halted Press Assn.—Elec. Tel.
