£1,000,000 APPEAL
HALF WAY REACHED OVER £500,000 IN HAND CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday The Dominion organiser of the All Purposes Appeal for £1,000,000, Major J. Abel, reported to a meeting of the Canterbury Patriotic Council today that more than £500,000 had already been raised. Major Abel the following progress report on the appeal in the main districts, the quota being given in parentheses:—Auckland, £124,000 (£250,000); Wellington, £89,000 (£200,000); Canterbury, £84,000 (£150,000): Otago, £70,000 (£100,000); Hawke’s Bay, £41.500 (£50.000); Nelson, £26.400 (£30,000); East Coast, £22.500 (£25,000); Southland, £17.500 (£25,000); Taranaki, £12,000 (£50,000); Marlborough, £B3OO (£15,000); Westland. £6IOO (£20,000); total, £501,300 (£940.000). Outlining efforts being made in other parts of New Zealand. Major Abel said that Auckland was launching an appeal for £127,000 in the metropolitan area alone. Wellington was this weA occupied with a queen carnival intended to raise £IOO.OOO. Otago had invested practically all its funds for rehabilitation and was now preparing another appeal for £25,000 for general purposes. Hawke’s Bay, with barely £9OOO to complete its quota, was also organising a queen carnival to raise the balance. Taranaki, Marlborough and Westland were also organising carnivals, and Nelson would easily exceed its auota when a carnival to raise £6OOO in the Buller district was completed. Southland was continuing to increase its fund steadily by regular weekly contributions.
