RAILWAY EARNINGS GROSS RECEIPTS HIGHER INCREASE IN NET PROFIT (By Telegraph.—special to Times) WELLINGTON, Thursday A working profit of £191,932 is shown in the railway accounts for the four weeks ended January 4, an abstract of which was published in the Gazette tonight. The result, derived from traffic during the greater part of the Christmas and New Year holiday season, is an increase of £41,214 compared with the corresponding period last year. The gross receipts for the four weeks amounted to £878,326, or £74,534 more than last year. Expenses at £686,394 were £33,320 higher. The operating accounts for the North Island show a revenue of £479,777, an increase of £36,463. The expenses were £373,702, or £19,408 higher. Net revenue at £106,075 was £17,055 more than a year ago. In the South Island, receipts were £265,727 and expenses £226,637, these amounts being £29,886 and £10,152 respectively more than the corresponding figures last year. A net profit of £39,085 compares with £19,351. The balance of miscellaneous revenue was £46,772, an increase of £4425. Period Of 40 Weeks Revenue for the 40 weeks from April 1 to January 4 amounted to £8,194,605, an increase of £857,912. Expenses totalling £7,163,877 were £318,592 higher. Net revenue at £1,030,728 increased by £539,320.
