WELLINGTON, Wednesday A farewell message to the people of New Zealand was issued tonight on behalf ol Viscount Galway, who has relinquished his office of Governor-General and left the Dominion on his return to Great Britain. Simultaneously with His Excellency’s departure, a proclamation was gazetted announcing that the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, had assumed the office of Administrator of New Zealand. He will act in this capacity until Viscount Galway’s successor, Sir ‘Cyril Newall, arrives in the Dominion and is sworn-in as Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall was recently reported to have arrived in Canada on his way to New Zealand. “To all, I say, ‘Your King and country thank you: carry on,’ ” said Viscount Galway, when thanking the people of New Zealand for their part in the war effort, in the course of his farewell message. Period Since 1935 Since that day in April, 1935, when he first arrived, the world had seen great changes. New Zealand then was just weathering the severe world-wide depression, which had affected all countries. A small, fertile country of great productive capacity, it was not long before New Zealand was experiencing better times. Then came the present great conflict in which New Zealand, with all other parts of the Empire, was playing her part. Throughout this Dominion splendid work was being done by the National Patriotic Fund Board, the provincial councils and committees, the Lady Galway Guild, the Navy League and other organisations, which were rendering all the aid in their power. The Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John were once again to the fore with their good work. Thousands Serving Thousands of young New Zealanders were serving in the forces. The Maoris, side by side with the pakehas, were showing their loyalty to the Crown and the determination of the Maori people to take their part in the task in hand. Thousands of other people were doing their part, giving money, or serving in the Home Guard and other bodies.

“Soon,” said His Excellency, “you will have among * you your new Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, whose outst' nding record you know.” He was sure they would accord Sir Cyril and Lady Newall a warm welcome to New Zealand.

In conclusion, said Lord Galway, he wished to voice his warmest thanks to the Government of New Zealand and the people, Maori and pakeha alike, who had made Lady Galway and himself welcome and their stay in the Dominion pleasant. , His Excellency added: “We carry with us happy recollections of New Zealand and its people. Farewell.”
