NATIVE LAND COURT
JUDGE BROWNE RETIRES CBv Telegraph.—Special to Times) WANGANUI, Monday Having been associated with the Native Department for more than 59 years, Judge James Wakelin Browne, Durie Hill, Wanganui, has retired after a record period of service. Tributes to the esteem ir, which he is held by Maori and pakeha, and by his associates in the Native Land Court, were paid when the staff ot the Native Department, Wanganui, in association with members of the Wanganui and Taranaki District Law Societies, held a valedictory dinner in his honour. The Native Minister, Mr Langstone, was present and there was a large gathering of tl.e department's officers from all parts of the North Island. The Maori race was also well represented. The Under-secre-tary of the department, Mr O. N. Campbell, Wellington, presided, and 1 also in attendance were Deputyi Chief Judge G. P. Shepherd (Wellington), Judge J. H. Harvey j (Rotorua), Mr H. Tai Mitchell, | C.M.G. (Rotorua) and representatives of the legal profession.
