PRIZE-GIVING FUNCTION

KAIPAKI SUNDAY SCHOOL The scholars attending the Kaipaki Sunday School, recently, held their annual prize-giving and concert in the Kaipaki Hall. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, and the Rev. Hitchcock, Cambridge, was in the chair. At the conclusion of an excellent programme presented by the children. the Rev. Hitchcock called upon Mrs A. Goodwin, the superintendent, to give her report and balance sheet, which showed the school to be in a financial position. The prizes and attendance diplomas were presented by the Rev. Hitchcock. who first offered his congratulations both to the children and Mrs Goodwin for the efficient manner in which this school is conducted. Little Kathleen Farrell then presented Mrs Goodwin with a beautiful bouquet and a gift. Mrs Goodwin suitably replied, and thanked all who had helped to make the evening a success.

WHITIORA The Whitiora Women’s Institute recently held its monthly meeting in the Y.M.C.A. rooms, when Mrs D. I. Gate was in the chair. There was only a fair attendance of members. It was decided to hold a picnic at the Lake on January 22, at 10.30, members to bring their friends and families. On account of urgent business the next Institute meeting will be held on February 19 instead of February 26. Mrs Ousley kindly arranged the following programme:—Mrs J. Coombridge, recitations; Miss Jean McLachian . accompanied by Mrs A. McLachlan), violin solos. A competition supplied by Mrs Ousley, was won by Mrs Mangnall and Mrs Kirkwood. Mrs Gate, on behalf of the committee, wished the members the compliments of the season. Mrs Lerkie presented Mrs Gate, Mrs Cook (secretary), and Mrs Henry (treasurer), with charming bouquets. Mrs Gate thanked Mrs Lerkie for the kind thought. Afternoon tea brought the last meeting of 1940 to a close. TE KOWHAI Although the weather was bad, there was a very good attendance at the Te Kowhai Women’s Institute. Regret was expressed that the garden party at Mrs Cox’s home was again postponed. Mrs Gibbeson, president, presided. Mrs J. W. Chapman was the speaker and she gave an interesting report on the Dominion Council meeting and the patriotic work of the Institutes. Letters of thanks were received from the secretary of the leper fund and from Mrs Teals, whose two sons are on active service. The roll call was most amusing, being, “A war joke,” and hearty applause greeted some of the more daring jokes. The competitions resulted as follows:—Best iced sponge, Mrs McGowan; decorated plate garden, Mrs Adams. The December meeting was ■ arranged as a Christmas party for the children, and hostesses were Mrs Kean, senr., Mrs Hostick, Mrs Kean, junr., and Mrs Jones.
