RESCUE WORKERS

20,000 CLEAR DEBRIS “TOUGH GUYS” OF DEFENCE (Times Air Mail Service.) LONDON, Sept. 11 Between 18,000 and 20,000 men of the London rescue parties working in shifts, and many others employed by the large contractors, are engaged in a high-speed effort to clear away debris and re-establish normal conditions in areas which have been affected by the bombing. An official of the Ministry of Home Security told me yesterday that they were well satisfied that the paper scheme prepared for a situation such as London was now facing was thoroughly efficient. Ten and 20-ton lifting jacks and oxyacetylene cutting apparatus are among the instruments available for immediate use. Very heavy jobs, needing the use of big tackle and cranes, .are handed over to contractors. There have already been a number of casualties among the rescue workers, but their spirit is unaffected. They pride themselves on being the “tough guys” of Civil Defence.
