FAREWELL DANCE
RUGSY LEAGUE FUNCTION There was a large attendance at the League Club’s Social Hall, at Davies Park, Huntly, when a farewell dance was tendered to soldier members of the club and others home on leave, who were all guests of the South Auckland Rugby League. A happy evening was spent, music for dancing being supplied by Allan’s Orchestra. About forty-six players took part in the euchre tournament. The duties of masters of ceremonies were capably carried out by Messrs J. Mclntosh and P. Webb, of Ohinewai. During the evening Mr H. Jakeman, president of the Huntly South Club, made the presentation cl' a gold engraved signet ring to Mr J. Ashcroft, a member of the Huntly South Club for several years, who was on leave. On behalf of the Huntly Club, Mr E. Sutherland, president, referred to Mr H. Ashcroft’s good’record in the club, and presented him with a silver wristlet watch, suitably inscribed. Mr Ashcroft suitably returned thanks, and thanked the League for the function in honour of the men. Mr H. Gavin, vice-president, on behalf of the Huntly Bowling Club, presented Mr A. C. Shead, a member of the club, with a soldiers’ hold-all, and thanked the League for the opportunity of making the presentation. Mr Shead suitably replied. Mr A. Harlock wished the men the best of luck and a safe return, after which they were accorded musical honours. Mr W. C. Davies, secretary of the South Auckland Rugby League, called on Mr A. Harlock, the chairman, to present the Senior Cup to the Huntly South Club (second year in succession), and the Innes Memorial Shield to the Huntly Club (sixth year in succession. Messrs T. Shaft; captain, and G. Stevens, who received the respective trophies on behalf of the clubs, suitably replied. Novelty dances were won by Mr J. Ashcroft and Miss C. Harmsworth, Miss Colleen Berry and Mr O. Brooks, Mrs F. H. Smith and Mr J. McNamara. The euchre prize-winners were Mrs W. O. Callaghan and Mrs W. H. Harris, and Messrs 11. Juketnan and D.
