OFFER CONSIDERED
WAITOA RIVER LAND HALF COST OF CLEARANCE OTHER HALF PUBLIC WORKS (Special to Time*) MATAMATA, Wednesday A meeting of farmers whose land adjoins the Waitoa River between Peria and Waharoa was held at Waharoa last night to consider an offer by the Minister of Public Works to undertake the clearing and deepening of the river. Mr P. Scherer, Waharoa representative on the Matamata Increased Production Committee. presided, and Mr F. E. Hughes, chairman of the Thames Valley Drainage Board, through which body the offer was made, was also present. The Minister stated in his letter that a Public Works engineer had inspected the area, which extended along some six miles of the stream, and the work would benefit some 500 acres of river flats. The estimated cost was £950. and he was prepared to proceed with it immediately if the settlers would find half the cost. After a long discussion a committee consisting of Messrs J. Dickey. D. R. Gunn and R. Bartleet was set up to enquire into the classification of top land and the amount per acre which it would be necessary to levy, the committee to report to a later meeting.
