HUNT FOR PRISONERS

POLICE WARMLY PRAISED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday ‘‘The efficient work of the Auckland police in capturing the four prisoners who escaped from the Mount Eden gaol calls for something more than formal commendation,” said the Prime Minister in a statement today. “I feel sure that the people of the Auckland district in particular and the community as a whole will agree with me that the officers of the police department deserve an expression of warm appreciation of their services. The search for the fugitives was an arduous task calling for organisation and keen vigilence. Under the competent direction of Superintendent J. Cummings and Sub-Inspector Hall all the members of the detective and uniformed branches of the police service, together with several officers of the Prisons Department, worked hard and efficiently day and night, in bad weather, to secure the arrest of the escaped men. ‘‘The police were helped in their transport service by Mr C. E. Johnston, owner of a fleet of motor-cars, and this assistance was of great value. Radio, in particular the assistance of IYA. also plaj'ed an effective part. I wish to congratulate everyone who took part in the search on their work and its complete success.”
