AOTEA’S SUCCESS

HOOKER CLIP FINAL WIN OVER OLD BOYS HOCKEY COMPETITION ENDS By defeating Old Boys in a fast and closely-contested match on Saturday by two goals to one, Aotea annexed the Hooper Cup. The Technical team has experienced a particularly successful season, for it previously won the Killip Memorial Shield, the emblem of supremacy in the principal senior hockey competition. Usually, the Hooper Cup competition is conducted as a knockout competition, but this season it was played over two rounds. Kaipaki, in gaining a win over Colts by two goals to one on Saturday, was able to claim second place in the competition. The Hooper Cup competition table

FAST AND OPEN AOTEA JUST WINS In a fast and open game, which was very even territorially, Aotea just headed Old Boys by two goals to one. The Technical team’s goalie. Puck, was no small factor in its success as he saved brilliantly on several occasions. The teams were:—Aotea: Puck, Bowler, Clark, Hinton, Jenkins, N. Sage, Fountain, Hoff, Powdrill, Judge, Sage. Old Boys: Wattam, Broadbent, Pountney, Olive, Ross, Ojala, Chard, Vercoe, Ewan, Wright, Sutherland. A penalty corner gave Old Boys an early chance but Puck used his pads te good effect in blocking Ewan’s hard shot. Judge headed a fast* coiyrter-attack down midfield and brought the ball through on his own to the circle. However, he was travelling too fast to make an accurate shot at goal, and the ball was sent behind. Pountney Saves Well Pountney was saving well whenever Aotea’s forwards brought the ball within goaling distance, his hard hitting often putting Old Boys in an attacking position. Chard brought Old Boys down to midfield by good ball control after the Technical team had been pressing hard in the circle. From a roll-in in Old Boys’ twenty-five, Ross sent the ball away. Ewan followed it up and Chard carried on the attack down the left flank. The attack was pressed home in the circle, but Puck kicked clear in the face of hot opposition. Puck later again blocked well when Ewan shot hard from a corner. Old Boys continued to press and a further corner gave Ewan another opportunity. However, this time he was bustled and the defenders got the ball away. A good movement gave Old Boys the opening goal. From a corner, Ewan did not attempt to goal but sent the ball on to Vercoe, who caught the goalie unawares with a nice shot into the net. Old Boys 1, Aotea 0. On Equal Terms The Technical team replied to this reverse with a fast circle attack. A melee in the goal-mouth followed a corner, Judge placing Aotea on equal terms when he scooped the ball into the net. Aotea 1, Old Boys 1. Wattam saved nicely when Aotea pressed in another attack. Olive followed the ball up and sent it furthet down-field. Aotea went ahead, however, when in a loose forward rush Hoff took the ball right to the goal-mouth and sent it past the goalie. Aotea 2, Old Boys 1. No-further score was registered before the final whistle.

Messrs Hunter and Fabling were the umpires.
