INFALLIBLE TEST
Practical men have rightly come to the conclusion that the only infallible test of the dairy capacities of a cow is the testing sheet, and that the quality and capacity of the udder itself are the most important indications of such. We should beware of the fleshy udder, because if we judge by outward appearance, such gives great promise, but never fails to disappoint. The perfect udder has a fine elastic skin, and, when empty, hangs in loose folds; but the fleshy udder looks almost as full after milking as before. It is a remarkable fact that the former type of udder is, as a rule, the easier of the two to milk, a copious flow being obtained with comparatively little effort on the milker’s part.
