LOCAL AND GENERAL
Company Director’s Death Cabled advice has been received in Auckland of the death in Melbourne of Mr A. F. Bell, C.M.G., managing director of Robert Harper and Company, with interests in New Zealand.
Improvement in Weather There has been a slight improvement in the weather and a fine weekend appears likely. The barometer has risen slightly and rain showers are becoming less frequent. For the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. this morning, .04in. of rain was recorded.
Delivery of Fertilisers Difficulties associated with obtaining prompt delivery of fertilisers were stressed by several shareholders at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., to-day. Mr W. Goodfellow pointed out that the main difficulty was bound up with the problem of obtaining a sufficient number of railway trucks during the rush period. Trade In Auckland Prices for groceries and other general commodities continue to rise in Auckland. Merchants have spent a fairly busy week, the demand covering a wide range of goods. Tobacco and cigarette deliveries were heavy, but were not quite as substantial as previously. It is thought that storekeepers are liquidating stocks procured some months ago, when orders were particularly large. Meat Deliveries To Stop From the beginning of next month butchers in the Wellington suburb of Karori, of whom there are five, will cease the delivery of meat owing to restriction in their petrol allowances. They have agreed to surrender their licenses and take their vans off the road. In other suburbs butchers are encouraging customers to the cash and carry system, and many deliveries are already eliminated.
Dairy Appointments The appointment of Mr J. E. Hunt as managing director of Empire Dairies Limited, for a period of five years, in succession to the late Mr J. B. Wright, was announced by Mr W. Goodfellow, managing director of Amalgamated Dairies, Limited, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company today. Mr Hunt would also be a director of Amalgamated Dairies. Prior to his appointment, said Mr Goodfellow, Mr Hunt was London manager for Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, Limited, and had extensive experience in the marketing of New Zealand dairy produce in the United Kingdom. Mr A. L. Finch, who had served as Mr Wright’s assistant for 15 years, had been appointed London manager for Amalgamated Dairies.
