NEW ZEALAND APPLES
HIGH PRICES IN LONDON SHORTAGE OF SUPPLIES IMPORTERS’ GOOD SEASON (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 5, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 4 Dominion apples have become a luxury owing to the shortage of supplies. Only 382,000 cases arrived from Australia and New Zealand during June, and 388,000 cases during July, and prices soared until the cheapest Australian fruit were fetching 22s per case and better varieties 26s and 27s wholesale, and the retailers’ lowest price was lOd per lb or 2sd for a 2J-inch apple. These prices enabled importers to recover the losses incurred early in the season, when values were low, and though there is likely to be some setback from the present high level before the season ends a month hence, as the home-grown supplies increase importers are unlikely to have any reason to complain about the results of the season. The last New Zealand shipments arrived this week, making the season’s total 560,000 cases. The arrivals from Australia up to the present are 1,201,000 cases, and a further 514,000 cases are due in August.
