TEARS IN EYES

MR CHURCHILL SAD ENTHUSIASM IN COMMONS HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received July 5, 12.50 p.m.) LONDON, July 4 In his statement in the House of Commons, Mr Churchill said: “I fear that the loss of life in the French Navy and in the harbour must have been heavy. We were compelled to use severe measures and several immense explosions were heard. “The House will not expect me to say anything about the other French ships at large, except our inflexible resolve to do our utmost to prevent them from falling into Germany’s hands. We must expect an attack, and even to be invaded if that proves possible in our own island, before long. We are making every preparation to repel assaults against Britain and Ireland.” Mr Churchill sat down with his eyes filled with tears. The House immediately burst into applause, and members sprang to their feet and waved their order papers. Mr C. R. Attlee and Mr Neville Chamberlain stood on either side of Mr Churchill, who seemed almost crushed by the weight of the applause, and sat crouched in his seat with his chin on his chest, but quickly recovered and rose and moved that the House go into secret session. Resentment in France Viscount Halifax, in the House of ' Lords, after making a statement (similar to that of Mr Churchill, concluded: “It is inevitable that our ac- | tion, when distorted by German | propagandists, will create sharp rei sentment in France.”
