BOWLS AT MATAMATA DISCUSSION ON MOTION (Special to Times.) MATAMATA, Thursday A notice of motion in the name of Mr J. Buchanan, that no lady player be allowed to play on the green or be accepted for membership, provoked keen discussion at the annual meeting of the Matamata Bowling Club. QUEEN CARNIVAL TOTAL OF £4OOO EXPECTED A sum of over £6O was raised at a Mock Court conducted in favour of the candidature of the Farmers’ Queen (Miss Pat Simpson). Mrs A. H. Lambourne acted as judge, and in the caricature of Mae West brought many humorous charges against well-known citizens. She was assisted by Mrs L. Mason, as clerk of the court, and a squad of policemen of both sexes, whose persuading methods produced some 150 appearances before the court. The Queen Carnival closes on Friday, July 5, after an evening street carnival. Approximately £3500 has already been paid in as a result of the carnival, and it is expected that the final figures will be in the vicinity of £4OOO. The sum of £3400 was raised before June 24 and was handed in for the Sick and Wounded Fund. The balance will go to the Provincial Patriotic Fund. LADIES’ NIGHT ORPHANS’ CLUB SESSION There was a good attendance at the Matamata Orphans’ Club ladies’ night, the president, Mr Wilbert Marks, being chairman. The orchestra, under Conductor P. Ingham, was well received, and the following artists contributed to an excellent programme:—Messrs W. Marks and W. Emery (duets); J. E. Cronin and J. Lee (songs), G. Newsome (elocution), T. Billings (violin solos), W. Clague (cornet solo), and P. Stockdale (humour). Mrs W. D. Hay and Mrs R. Powell played accompaniments. SHOW ASSOCIATION PROFIT CONSIDERED GOOD With a profit of £4 4s on the last show, in the face of petrol restrictions and a drop in entries, the year could be considered satisfactory, stated the president, Mr J. Landells, at the annual general meeting of the Matamata Agricultural ana Pastoral Association. Outstanding subscriptions were less by £lB, but were still too high at £97 18s 6d. The incoming committee was recommended to have the sheep and pig pens rebuilt. The following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P.; president, Mr J. Landells; vicepresidents, Messrs C.
