OVERHEAD RAILWAY BRIDGE 'HIGHWAY DEVIATION’ (Special to Times) OTOROHANGA, Thursday. Work on the overhead railway bridg-e at the northern entrance to Otorohang-a .will bo completed this month, bin the extensive earthworks will take '.some time to complete before the Auckland-welling-ton and other traffic is -diverted to ‘the new route. This will eliminate the railway crossing- over which the traffic passes at present, and which has proved a very dangerous crossing. Several 'fatalities have occurred In past years. The bridge over the Main Trunk railway has a deck-length or 14'7'f>t, is 35ft wide, the runway being i24:ft, and a 4ft footpath being included on each side. In al.l, approximately 330 cubic yards of concrete has been used, and this is heavily reinforced, containing about 3-2 tons of steel. The estimated cost of the bridge alone is £4500. The Public Works Department (has a formidable task in shifting a hillside from the approaches to the bridge, as the estimated cubic yardage of spoil to be removed is ’5'2,000 . TERRITORIAL N.C.0,’8. DEPARTURE FOR CAMP Fourteen N.C.O.’s left Otorohnnga for Narrow Neck Camp on Monday morning to enter the district school lor intensive training for home defence. They are to spend two months in camp. BCHOOL DENTAL CLINIC The Otoro'hanga District High School dental clinic Is to be enlarged by the Education Board at an estimated cost of i £2T3 to the board, the balance to he round ! by the parents or the town and district. At present 400 children are being treated at the 'Clinic, but 200 eligible for treatment at the clinic arc unable to receive attention owing- to the facilities being inadequate. The department had provided a second nurse, and the position was that two nurses wpre working in a singleunit clinic. The Parents’ Association is providing £4O for the power-unit required. The school committee has been advised by the Department of Education that three open-air additional classrooms, a staff room and a storeroom will be erected as soon as possible. It is likely that a sick bay will be Included In the proposed buildings. EVACUATED CHILDREN It was disclosed at the Otorohanga County Council meeting on Tuesday that already homes are available for 20 children in Otorohanga. One councillor revealed that two English children were on their way to become hi 3 and his wife’s charges during- the war. MAORI HOME DESTROYED A Maori occupied home Just outside the boundary or Otorohanga was completely destroyed bv fire on Monday night. In the absence'of water-mains, the local fire brigade could do nothing to save the property, which was quickly consumed together with the contents.
