ENGINEER’S SCHEDULE

£24,061 ALLOCATED MAINTENANCE OF STREETS DETAILS OF EXPENDITURE The borough engineer Mr R. Worley’s schedule for the year amounted to £24,061, the largest item being £14,056 for street maintenance. The schedule, compared with last year, is as follows:

Summary of Work The street maintenance work to be undertaken during the year is as follows:

Repainting Traffic Bridge Referring to the stormwater drainage expenditure of £7OO, Mr R. Worley said that of this sum about half had already been spent in cleaning the open drains and in completing certain works only partly completed during last financial year, such as the stormwater system from the Lake gates in Ruakiwi Street, New works required included an extension of the piped system up Hinau Street to Lafferty Street at an estimated cost of £l2O, to prevent excessive scour; at Edgecombe Street to pick up water from corners of Charlemont Street and Ulster Street, also at an estimated cost of £120; and minor extensions at the end of Parr Street, corner of Victoria and Abbotsford Streets and other places. In the sewer drainage of £I3OO, provision had been made for the extension, at present in hand, in Claude Street, and for some additional minor extensions. With the falling off in building operations it was assumed that the demand for such extensions would be comparatively small. The repainting of the traffic bridge at a cost of £BSO was in hand and the whole cost would come into this financial year. With the falling off in motor camping resulting from the benzine restrictions, it was considered that the present camp was big enough, and provision had therefore not been made for opening up the new camp, the necessary buildings and facilities for which were likely to cost several hundred pounds. Increased Costs Holiday and wet-time pay was introduced as a separate item last year and an arbitrary figure of £7OO was set down for it. In practice it was found that in the general account alone this figure, which m effect covers' the wages paid without work, amounted to £1047. It had been hoped to be able to have reduced street maintenance this year as a result of the recent expenditure on permanent works, added Mr Worley. However, the increase in the cost of the materials had offset any savings so effected. _ln one item, bitumen alone, the increase over 1938 prices would cost £I2OO for the year. No provision had been made for the improvement in smoothness to the main carriageways such as was now possible by the plant mix method. This work had been classed as highly desirable but able to be done without under the present conditions. , . Under the heading of permanent works a list of works totalling £IOO2 was shown. These works were really necessary in order to provide the residents in the areas affected with reasonable amenities. Other important works, of which there were plenty, could be considered when it was known what funds Were available. Waterworks Expenditure
