During the early part of this financial year the complete renovation of the interior of the new reservoir was carried out. After nearly ten years of service it was found that a large number of rust holes were developing on the surface of the rust-resist-ing lining, and it was deemed advisable to thoroughly clean the whole of the interior, specially treat the rust holes, and give the whole iron surface, inside and out, two good coats of protective paint, which treatment should prevent the rust from developing or spreading. Besides the expenditure on waterworks for actual maintenance of the service, there were other items of expenditure which it was advisable to carry out this year in order to be sure that the facilities for supplying an adequate quantity of pure and wholesome water were in excess of the demand. No doubt the extension of the supply to the suburban areas in the adjacent counties had brought the time a year or two nearer than would otherwise be the case, but the revenue received from these supplies was now considerable and more than warranted the policy of giving the supply. To complete the new installation the following year the completion of the pumping main was estimated to cost £IOOO and new pumping plant about a similar figure. It would appear from the revenue account that there would be little difficulty in financing these items of expenditure without recourse to loan or special allocation. The addition to the filter plant this year would cost £2500, and part cost of the new pumping mains for this year would be £I4OO. The total cost for the waterworks department for the year was estimated at £20,003, as against £15,936 spent last year.
