DOG DESTROYED

MISCHIEF ALLEGED REGISTRAR IN COURT A charge of committing mischief by wilfully killing a dog valued at £5 was preferred against John Edward Chitty, dog registrar of the Waikato County Council (Mr F. A. Swarbrick) when he appeared before Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, today. Chitty pleaded not guilty and decision was reserved. According to the evidence of the owner of the dog, E. S. Day, the animal was always kept chained up and had never been known to attack a person. Chitty, however, stated that he had been attacked by the dog, which was not chained up. In selfdefence he struck it with an iron bar and later shot the animal, feeling justified in doing so as he considered it dangerous. Chitty said he was bitten several times on the arm.
