ALLIES AND SIAM
PACT OF NON-AGGRESSION COMPLAINT BY JAPAN SAFETY OF NEW ZEALAND (United Press Assn—Elee. Tel. Copyright) TOKIO, July 2 Britain is trying to provide for the safety of Australia and New Zealand by depriving Japan of naval bases, says the authoritative newspaper Asahi in an attack on the British and French pacts of non-aggression with Siam. The newspaper asserts that Britain and France coerced Siam into the pacts to prevent Japan from using Siam in a war against Britain. “ Britain, apart from the question of Australian and New Zealand security, is trying to prevent attacks on India, Borneo, Burma and Singapore,” the Asahi adds. “ Similarly, France is attempting to guard Indochina and New Caledonia.” The Tokio correspondent of the New York Times comments that these statements, appearing as they do in a leading newspaper, cannot be dubbed “ irresponsible speculation by a nationalist tabloid.”
