TASMAN AIR MAIL

PHILATELIC INFORMATION NO RETURN COVERS CARRIED A weekly trans-Tasman air mail service is expected to commence operation this month. The actual date, together with particulars of mail closing time, will be announced later. All letters despatched by the first flight will be distinctively marked with a horizontal rectangular rubber stamp (2in. by l£in.) as follows: “New AustraliaEngland Through Air Mail Service Inaugural Flight. 1940.” To facilitate the operation of censorship, philatelists are requested to post first-flight covers unsealed as early as possible. The department will not be issuing special covers for the occasion, but it is understood that souvenir covers will be available shortly from all leading stationers. Letters for New Zealand addresses, i.e., “return” covers, will not be forwarded by the Service. All articles received by the first inward flight will be machine backstamped at Auckland.
